Measuring Your Odds…

In Mississippi Stud Poker, you can measure this in two ways – the overall edge for the house is 4.91%, but that doesn’t account for the amount of money that’s in action on average (It assumes that you never place a raise).

One relatively recent trend in casino games is to create games based on poker. Mississippi Stud is one of these, and it’s a relatively popular one. The big difference between a game like Mississippi Stud and regular poker is who competes for the money. In a casino game, the casino banks all the action. Boot Hill Casino & Resort Mississippi Stud Rules of the Game Mississippi Stud is a five-card poker game that lets you bet up to 10 units on a single hand. In Mississippi Stud, you compete against a paytable, not against the dealer, and you win if your hand is a pair.

When and if you place raises, the house edge on the total amount of money you have in action drops to 1.37%. This, of course, assumes that you’re placing additional bets when it’s mathematically correct to do so. This post explains how to play Mississippi Stud Poker and offers strategy advice so you can get the best odds.

How to Play Mississippi Stud Poker

Learning how to play Mississippi Stud Poker takes almost no time at all. Here’s a quick overview before I get into the Mississippi Stud Poker strategy section:

  • To start, you place an ante bet. Then you get two cards face down. The game also has three community cards, which are also face down at this point in the game.
  • When you look at your cards, you can then fold or place a bet 1X, 2X, or 3X the size of the ante.
  • After that, the dealer flips over the first community card.
    • If you’re still in the game, you can now also place a bet of 1X, 2X, or 3X the ante.
    • You also have the option of folding.
  • You can probably guess what happens next. The dealer flips over another card, and you have the same betting options as before (as well as the option to fold).

Final Community Card

Best

When the final community card is revealed, if you haven’t folded yet, you get paid off based on the pay table. A common pay table for Mississippi Stud Poker looks like this:

  • Royal flush – 500 to 1.
  • Straight flush – 100 to 1.
  • Four of a kind – 40 to 1.
  • Full house – 10 to 1.
  • Flush – 6 to 1.
  • Straight – 4 to 1.
  • Three of a kind – 3 to 1.
  • Two pairs – 2 to 1.
  • Pair of jacks or higher – even money.
  • Pair of 6s through 10s – push.

Anything below a pair of 6s is a loss for the player

If you’ve read about how to play Let It Ride Poker, much of this probably looks familiar. The big difference is that you get to add to the size of your bet instead of reduce the size of your bet as the game goes on. This seems to have a subtle psychological effect on most players, by the way.

When I played in a casino where the Mississippi Stud table was next to the Let It Ride table, people stayed at the Mississippi Stud table longer. They got frustrated and left the Let It Ride table much faster. The problem is that the strategy for Mississippi Stud Poker is a little more complicated than the strategy for Let It Ride Poker.

Mississippi Stud Odds and the House Edge

You measure the odds of a casino table game with a statistical metric called the house edge. It’s the mathematically projected amount of each bet that you expect to lose over the long run. For example, if you’re playing a game with a $100 bet and a 1% house edge, you can expect to lose an average of $1 for every $100 you bet – if you play an infinite number of hands. The closer you get to infinity, the closer you’ll get to the expected results.

On the other hand, in the short run, your results will tend to veer away from the statistical expectation. They’re more likely to result in greater losses, but variance is the phenomenon that you’re experiencing. The longer you play, the more likely you are to lose – so your best bet if you get ahead early is to quit early, too.

The house edge for the game is 4.91% until you take into account the raises. If you make raises appropriately, the house edge actually drops to 1.37%. Since the house edge is a ratio, you look at the average loss versus the amount of money you have in action. If you’re raising enough at the right times, you have enough money in action to reduce the house edge to 1.37%.

Mississippi Stud Poker Strategy Tips

The first thing you need to understand about Mississippi Stud Poker strategy is that it’s never correct to bet 2X the ante. You’ll always do one of the following three things:

  1. Fold
  2. Raise 1X the ante
  3. Raise 3X the ante

This has the effect of simplifying the strategy

The next thing you need to understand is that high cards are much more important than low cards. Any face card is worth twice as much as any card ranked six through ten. A quick glance at the pay table should make it clear why this is the case.

For instance, in case slot player bets X quantity of money, potential win must be up to 1000 times greater than bet. What’s more, slot offers solid 96.23% RTP – it gives high probability for big winnings in real money play with our link to bonus.Play slots with bonus! Smokin 777 slot machine.

Since you have three betting rounds, you need three separate strategies.

The easiest round to play is when you look at your hole cards

  • You’ll raise 3X the size of the ante if you have any pair, regardless of how high or low it is.
  • If you have any single face card, you’ll raise 1X the size of the ante. You’ll also raise 1X the size of the ante if you have two cards that are ranked 6 or higher.
  • If you have two low cards, you’ll fold.
  • Finally, if you have a five and a six of the same suit, you’ll raise 1X the ante.

When you get your third card, it gets a little more complicated, but it’s not TOO complicated. You’ll raise 3X the size of the ante with any hand that’s a guaranteed winner – any pair of 6s or higher, including three of a kind.

You’ll also raise 3X the size of the ante if you have any of the following drawing hands:

  1. A draw to a royal flush
  2. A draw to a straight flush with no gaps, but only if all the cards are higher than four.
  3. Or to a straight flush with a gap, but only if one of the cards is a face card
  4. A draw to a straight flush two games, but only if two of the cards are face cards.

You’ll raise 1X the size of the ante if you have any of the following hands:

  1. Any pair of 5s or lower. (You’re hoping to hit three of a kind.)
  2. A straight draw with no gaps, as long as all the cards are all higher than four.
  3. Any straight draw with two gaps, as long as at least two of the cards are higher than six.
  4. Hands with three cards that are ranked six or higher, or any hand with a face card and at least one other card ranked between six and ten.

And then you need a strategy for when you have four cards. It’s not too different from your strategy with three cards.

New us online casinos 2017. Raise 3X the size of the ante with any made hand, of course.

But also raise 3X the size of the ante with any of these hands:

  1. A flush draw
  2. An outside straight draw (see below)

The outside straight draw should have at least an 8 high, because you still want that shot at the possible pair. An outside straight draw can be filled with a high card or a low card. For example, 5678 is an outside straight draw, because you can fill it with a four or a nine.

You’ll raise 1X the size of the ante with the following hands:

  1. Any other straight draw than the one mentioned above.
  2. Low ranked pair.
  3. Any hand with two face cards, or a hand with one face card and two or more cards worth 6 to 10.
  4. Hands with three cards between 6 and 10 if you raised 3X on a previous round.

If you play with the correct strategy, Mississippi Stud Poker is some of the most fun you can have in the casino.

I just returned from a trip to Vegas, where I ‘found’ a new personal favourite table game – Mississippi Stud. This was accidental, I was looking for Caribbean Stud – only to find this has largely disappeared from casinos over the last few years.

Once you play Mississippi Stud (online or live), you’ll quickly see why this game is more fun, and has the potential for big wins too.

Here is how the game works:

You start with an ante bet, this is $5 minimum live and from $1 online. There are also 2 side bets, the 3 card bonus and 6-card bonus, which I have described after the main game.

The dealer gets 3 cards face down first, then each player is dealt two cards.

Here is where things get interesting.

You can now bet between 1 and 3 times your ante on each of 3 ‘streets’ of betting. For example, if you are dealt a pair of 6’s or over then you would bet 3 units for each of the dealers 3 cards (since you are guaranteed a push and can win a lot more). If you have 2 high cards which are not paired, then you can bet 1 unit at a time, if you pair with one of the dealer’s cards you can increase to 3 for the next card.

Since a high pair will always pay out, you do not need to wait for the dealer to turn each card – just add 3 units to each of the 3 betting squares and see how the hand progresses.

Play Mississippi Stud Online – The Pay Outs

I’ll go through an example below, first here are the pay outs. The best hand is made with any combination of your cards and the dealers 3 cards.

  • Pair 66 to 10-10: Push
  • Pair J-J +: Pays 1-to-1
  • 2 Pairs: Pays 2-to-1
  • Trips: Pays 3-to-1
  • Straight: Pays 5-to-1
  • Flush: Pays 6-to-1
  • Full House: Pays 10-to-1
  • Quads: Pays 20-to-1
  • Straight Flush: 100-to-1
  • Royal Flush: 500-to-1

Remember, you’ll bet 1 unit for the ante, then up to 3 for each of the 3 dealer cards. This means you can start with a pair, bet 9 units, turn up quads and have your total 10 bets multiplied by 20. I saw it happen – twice at the same table on the trip where I discovered the game!

Where to play? Not many places have this game yet, the only place I could find listing it for real money is BetFair New Jersey (which is only open those within NJ borders). Play Mississippi Stud Online – The Strategy

The core strategy for Mississippi stud is fairly simple, where it gets complex is including the straight / royal flush permutations in your action. Here you will find the basic strategy (based on card strength) and the straight flush addition at the end.

In this game you should think of the cards as low / mid / high.

  • Low Cards = 2 through 5
  • Mid Cards = 6 through 10
  • High Cards = Jacks through Aces

The First Decision Is Based On Your Own Cards

If you are dealt either a high pair or a mid-pair, you should add 3 units to all the remaining betting spots immediately. You are guaranteed at least a ‘push’ (for mid, or 1-to-1 win for high) and can easily improve to better. The same thing occurs if you pair one of the dealer’s cards or the dealer turns up a pair – as soon as you know that you have a push or better, just load up those remaining squares.

  • If you are dealt at least one high card, then play the first bet for one unit.
  • If you are dealt 2 mid-cards, then you should also play for one unit.
  • If you are dealt a low pair, then you should play for one unit.
  • You can also play 1 unit with 5-6 suited.

3 Card Decisions In Mississippi Stud

Once betting is completed, the dealer will turn over her first card. Your decision here depends on the mix of high, mid and low cards.

  • Again, if you hit 66+ then load up the remaining betting spots with 3 units each.
  • Otherwise, continue betting 1 unit if the following is true:
  • You have 2+ high cards or 1 high and 1 mid card
  • You have a low pair (22 to 55)
  • You have 3 mid-cards (6 to 10)
  • You have 3 suited cards
  • You have a no-gap low straight draw, or 1-gap straight draw with 2 mid+ cards.

There are some variations for straight flush and royal flush draws, which I have added to the end of this article.

4 Card Decisions In Mississippi Stud

If you made a pair 66 or better on the previous street then you should load up the last betting spot with 3 units. Otherwise, follow the guidelines below.

  • If you have 4 suited cards add 3 units to the last betting spot.
  • If you have an open ended straight draw 8 or over, raise 3 units
  • Otherwise, you’ll continue with 1 unit if the following is true:
  • You have a low pair
  • You have 2+ high cards
  • You have 1 high card and 2 mid-cards
  • You raised 3x on previous streets and have 1+ high or 2+ mid cards
  • You have an inside straight draw

Mississippi Stud Side Bets

There are two main side bets in the live version of Mississippi Stud. These are the 3 card bonus, and the 6 card bonus.

3-Card Bonus: This pays out based on the dealers 3 cards, with 50-to-1 possible for a straight flush. The minimum bet here is $5 live (I assume that when we get a widely available online game for real money this will be equal to the table stakes offered).

6-Card Bonus: This one combines the players 2 cards along with 4 separate cards which the dealer stores face-down before dealing the 3 normal cards. At Vegas Casinos you could get $1,000,000 for a 6-card royal flush in diamonds – with the stipulation that you needed to bet on the 3-card bonus too.

Where To Play Mississippi Stud Online

This game has yet to make it online for real money.. there are a couple of places to play for fun, http://playshfl.com/#missstud being the best by a long way.

There is also an Android app, which is also for fun-only, I have not yet tested this one out - though here is the link to the Google Play Store for anyone who is interested.

I know that some of you find play-money a little on the pointless side. If this is you then there are some entertaining casino poker alternatives around, Let 'em Ride is always fun, and of course, there is always 3-card poker. Worldwide readers can find both of these at the excellent www.32red.com

Mississippi Stud – Advanced Strategy

Royal and Straight Flush draws have huge returns in this game, and become worth changing up your strategy if you get the chance to make one. Remember, going for an inside draw will be higher variance, you’ll lose bets often when it misses. In the long-run, you’ll make more cash this way, so the following is worth learning.

The changes occur after 3 cards:

  • If you have any Royal Flush Draw or Straight Flush draw with no gaps, raise 3 units.
  • If your straight flush draw has 1 gap, raise 3 units if you also have 1 high card
  • If your straight flush draw has 2 gaps, raise 3 units with 2 high cards

What you will find is that your draw often gets busted on the 4th card, however you’ll still hit enough pairs, straights or flushes to give you smaller wins along the way.
